about the event

This event will begin with a seated, guided meditation, which will allow us to first connect with ourselves and settle into a space of gratitude, calm, and openness. We will then move into the cacao ceremony, where we'll let mama cacao open our hearts and fill us with energy, bliss, creativity, and focus. After we share our first few sips together, we will continue sipping our cacao as we make malas.

Our dear friend and meditation teacher, Niki Sims (Anandama), is a certified Shambhavananda meditation teacher and yoga instructor who has experience making malas, using malas in her own meditation practice, and leading mala making workshops. Malas (which consist of 108 “prayer beads”) are used to focus the mind and keep count of mantra during meditation. During this workshop, Niki will educate on the sacredness and use of malas as she assists you in making your own. Registration includes cacao and materials to make your own mala. We will have a variety of beads and string colors (for tassels) to choose from; however, if there are specific beads that you wish to use to create your own mala, feel free to bring your own.

We will be outside and seated for this event (at picnic tables), although there is the option to move indoors if you prefer and/or if the weather does not cooperate. If you decide to remain outside for the duration of the event, please wear appropriate clothing (layers are best in Colorado!) and, depending on the weather, bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and water. We will do our best to provide cushions to sit on, but please bring anything you may specifically need to feel comfortable sitting for this lengthy event (making a mala takes a long time!). Feel free to also bring a journal, yoga mat, or anything else you may wish to use during/after the event to capture any thoughts, emotions, or energies that arise.

It is easiest to connect with the spirit of cacao on an empty stomach and in the absence of other substances (caffeine, alcohol, marijuana, etc). We recommend fasting for at least 2-3 hours before the event. For more information on how to prepare for a cacao ceremony and what to expect, please click here.

To break our cacao fast, we will provide light snacks to enjoy during the mala workshop. Please feel free to bring a potluck-style snack to share with the group!

Please contact us ahead of time with any food allergies, if you are taking any prescription medications, including (but not limited to) antidepressant, cardiac, or blood pressure medications, and/or are pregnant or breastfeeding, so we can discuss modifying your cacao dose.

No meditation, cacao, or mala experience is necessary. To preserve the intimacy of this event, space is limited! We recommend registering as soon as possible to reserve your spot.
